Week 30 of kindergarten is busy with CVCE words, measurement, the 7 continents, space and the start of our alphabet countdown! Our kindergarten lesson plans feature hands-on activities, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Phonics And CVCE Words
This week, we keep working on CVCe words and vowels. We do a circle chart to focus on explicit instruction with decoding, segmenting, spelling, and blending. And we do explicit dictation and decoding activities all week. We also work with decodable text in whole group and small groups.

We also use our mnemonic letters and sound cards to spell and write words with the cvce pattern! We also use the cards to change short vowels to long vowels by adding the silent e or mamma e. The embedded mnemonics help students learn spelling patterns faster and improve recall!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: 7 Continents
This week, we keep exploring the 7 continents! This unit is one of my kids’ favorites because they love learning about different places. We spice this unit up with videos of the different continents and using Google Earth to fly to the continents! For each continent, we do a notice-and-wonder OR questions-and-answers, and each continent has an evidence organizer. At the end of the unit, we write about our favorite continent, favorite thing to do, and favorite natural feature. And we make a travel brochure for our favorite continent!

Lesson Plans for Kindergarten: Measurement
This week, we continue our measurement unit! We compare things by size, sort by size, we measure with dog biscuits (yes, dog biscuits), and we measure our friends and their feet!

First, we do a measurement brain dump. We share out all the words and ways we know to measure. I love this type of activity because it gives me a great idea of where the kids are in their learning and what their background knowledge might be!

Then we work together to put ourselves in order from smallest to biggest and then I give the kids strips of paper and they have to arrange them in order from smallest to biggest!

We read the book Measuring Penny and we measure classroom objects with dog biscuits, just like in the book!

And we end the week with two of our favorite measurement activities: measuring our friends and our feet!
We measure our friends using the tiles on the floor. And then we draw a picture to show who is bigger/smaller.

For measuring our feet, we take off our shoes and trace our friend’s foot. Cue all the squeals and laughter. Then we use pennies, cubes, paper clips, and crayons to measure our feet. We discuss why each one used more or fewer objects to measure.

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Space
This week, we launch into space for our next science unit! And what perfect timing with the Artemis mission!
We start with our schema map and learn about astronauts. If you want to explore space, you have to be an astronaut. We complete our astronaut application, and if we’re selected, we start exploring the planets. Spoiler alert: we’re all selected.

After we become astronauts, we learn about the planets. We visit one planet a day. For each planet, we look at actual photographs from NASA and read a book about the planet. We record our learning on our graphic organizer and fill out our Space Research Journal. This week we visit Mercury and Venus!

We also decorate our classroom to create a fun space theme! For our decorations, we use inflatables from Amazon and a space video on YouTube! Simple. Fun.

SEE ALL OF OUR SPACE ITEMS ON AMAZON!
And we make a fun space alien art project!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: EARTH DAY!
And since we’re exploring planets and Earth Day is April 22, it’s a perfect time to start working on our Earth Day unit! We focus on ways we can take care of the Earth, we go on a nature hike, and use our five senses to describe trash. This week, we will focus on what is trash and what can be recycled, and sorting things that are good for the Earth and bad for the Earth.

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: End Of The School Year Alphabet Countdown
And believe it or not, this is the week we start our Backward Bootcamp! That means we’re 26 days from the end of the school year. We celebrate a letter a day going BACKWARDS…it’s a countdown, ya’ll, and we all know a countdown is BACKWARDS…OK…enough of my soap box. Each day, we do a word web for phonics and phonemic awareness; the kids do independent work focused on handwriting, and we do a fun activity like dress-up days, art projects, snacks, etc.

This week is Z and Y. Z for zebra, Y for yellow. We eat zebra cakes and wear yellow!

For each letter, we also make a hat! There are two hats for the kids to choose from! The hats are included in our ABC BOOTCAMP manual (not the digital version on TPT). (Note: the manual also includes the digital version of the pages for immediate printing.

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Science Experiment
This week, our science experiment is to make a rocket. Because if we want to explore space, we need a rocket!
