Summer time means beach and pool time.  That means beach balls.  And beach balls are not just for the beach.  Beach balls are the perfect tool for use in the classroom!   You can make beach ball games and activities for all sorts of skills.  And the great thing about beach balls is that they are SUPER cheap!  (Just make sure to stock up during the summer!)  Today we’re sharing 5 different beach ball games you can make for your class and we’re kicking off SUMMER WITH SMORGIE 2018!!!

You will need:

beach balls

Sharpie

You can get cheap beach balls at Amazon, Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart.  This summer Wal-Mart has these beach balls with dots or circles on them.  These are PERFECT for making classroom games because the dots help keep things organized and provide some visual support for students!    And for $1 you have to buy 10 or 20 so you always have them.

Beach Ball Letters

Inflate your beach ball and use your Sharpie to write uppercase and lowercase letters on the beach ball.  I wrote the letters randomly all over the ball.

To play you can simply toss the ball to a student.  They catch the ball and read the letter they are touching (or the letter their thumb is closest to!).  You can also have them say the beginning sound of the letter or say a word that begins with the sound of the letter!    This beach ball game can be used a center, too!  Students toss the ball and write the letter they touch!

Here’s another way to use beach balls to add and subtract:

Write giant numbers to 10 (or 5 or 20) on the ball.  Toss the ball to a student.  They catch the ball with two hands and use the two numbers they are touching to make and solve an equation!  The class can write the equation and solve it on whiteboards!

Beach Ball 100

Inflate your beach ball and use your Sharpie to write numbers to 100 on the beach ball.

To play you can simply toss the ball to a student.  They catch the ball and read the number they are touching (or the number their thumb is closest to!).  You can also have them say the number and identify the number before and after.  Or you could ten more and ten less!   This beach ball game can be used a center, too!  Students toss the ball and write the number (or color) the number they touch!
