Space  Research Project

kindergarten space unit

The ‘staches are using my Space research creation to research and write about space, astronauts and planets!  We have officially been hired as astronauts and we are now on our journey through the solar system!  Each day we board our rocket and blast off to the next planet where we research the planet, look at images of the planet and write about the planet!

For each planet, we read a book and look at NASA photographs of the planet.  The students fill out a fact sheet for each planet.  The fact sheet includes facts about the planet and the students illustrate a picture of the planet.  For NASA photographs, check out this post!

This research project contains suggested books, recording sheets for each planet and writing pages as well as all the materials needed to create your research journal and graphic organizers!  This 2 week space unit is aligned to the NGSS.

Math: Subtraction

In math, we are working on subtraction to 20 and Subtraction BOOTCAMP!  This differentiated math curriculum involves whole group practice with subtraction to 10.  Then it also allows us to provide differentiated small group or individual activities.

This week we are doing some hands on subtraction games to practice subtraction to 10 and 20!

Up first, CHASING CHICKENS!  Grab some yellow balloons.  Write subtraction equations on the balloons.  Students chase the chickens and solve the equations!

Grab your free recording sheet here!

Dive In And Subtract!

We use our plastic swimming pool and ball pit balls to subtract!  Students “dive in” the pool, grab a ball and solve the equation!

For more details on DIVE IN AND SUBTRACT, check out this post!

We also have a little surprise game up our sleeve.  We are calling it WRECK EM subtraction.  It involves a Yo-Yo and Solo cups!  Stay tuned for all the awesome details!

Dealing Subtraction! And this week we’re going to be using our updated Dealin’ With Math creation to do small group subtraction practice using cards and we now have lots of fun centers for using our glittery cards!

This week we are also working on math fluency!   Each day we do a math fluency test that has no impact on student grades.  These tests are just to help our students build fluency (per our state standards!)  We start with 5 minutes and work down to 3 minutes!  We are using our FLASH Math Fluency creation!
