Letters And Sounds: Schedulin Sunday Family Research Project

Happy Schedulin’ Sunday! This week we’re continuing our Family Research Project and learning about families with various families activities. We’re also adding in a new anchor text to begin learning about changes in our community. I love this time of year because we are working through ABC BOOTCAMP and get to see the amazing growth and excitement in their letters and sounds! This week we’re also continuing Number Bootcamp and working on counting to 20 and of course still focusing on procedures and routines!

Family Research Project

This week we are continuing our family research project!  This is week 2 of our family research project.  The engagement, conversation and work we’ve done has been wonderful!   This research project involves lots of turn and talk, class charts and writing and drawing.

This week we’re going to continue discussing who is in our family by making a Venn Diagram of brothers and sisters!

For more on our family research project, check out this post:

Read It Up: The Curious Garden

This week our scope and sequence shifts from families to changes in our community. We will be reading The Curious Garden to being our discussions on changes. We will be using our new Read It Up for The Curious Garden. This week we will discuss how the city changes, we will design a playground and design a rooftop garden. As part of this unit, our entire grade level is making torn paper flowers. We will place all 150 flowers in our hallway to transform the hallway into a garden. Just like the boy in the book changed the city by planting a garden!

ABC BOOTCAMP

This week we are continuing ABC BOOTCAMP! ABC BOOTCAMP is the research-based curriculum we created to help students learn letters and sounds in 26 days! This week we are learning O-R. For each letter, we make a circle chart, a hat and do explicit handwriting instruction.

We are continuing to use a special edition of ABC BOOTCAMP!! This year we are using the brand new ZOO KEEPER ABC BOOTCAMP from our friends at Alive Studios. This version of ABC BOOTCAMP is EXACTLY the same as our 5 themes but features the zoo animals from Alive Studios. ZooKeeper ABC BOOTCAMP is only available with the purchase of a Letters Alive Kit from Alive Studios. But don’t worry, you can purchase ABC BOOTCAMP in any of the 5 themes from our TKS Store or TPT!

Alive Studios will have all the details of ZooKeeper ABC Bootcamp on their website soon. Check back to their website for all the details!

ABC BOOTCAMP: Small Groups

This week we’re ready to really jump into small groups. We will be using our ABC BOOTCAMP decodable readers and letter and sounds hunt. I love these letter hunts because it allows to focus on each sound and work on identifying beginning sounds in words. These can be targeted based on data!

Our ABC BOOTCAMP decodable books or alphabet books are differentiated so we can focus on words, letters and sounds or we can read predictable sentences.

This week our sight word reader (emergent reader!) is about transportation! These are a shared reading activity that we use each week to build reading skills and fluency as well as confidence in our readers! Grab your free reader here:

Our first counting activity will be counting peas. We will read 1,2, 3 peas. The students will count peas (big green circles) using ten frames. This will also be a small group activity for students who need more practice!

Our second counting activity will be putting rocks into a truck. For real. First, we will read 20 Big Trucks In The Middle Of The Road. Then students will put rocks into a truck. We are using real rocks and putting them into a Tonka truck.

For our small group lessons, we will be using our Cookie Counting Creation!

We will continue using our ten frame PowerPoint to work on 1 to 1 correspondence!
