Happy Schedulin’ Sunday! This week we’re continuing our “my community” unit and focusing on the people, places and activities in our community! I love this time of year because we are working through ABC BOOTCAMP and get to see the amazing growth and excitement in their letters and sounds! This week we’re also working on numbers and counting, continuing to add new centers and really jumping into small groups!

My Community Research Project

This week we are continuing our My Community research project. This is a new theme or unit in our scope and sequence, it’s also a long unit with the focus on communities and change and then we shift to community helpers!

communities lesson plans my community

This week we’re kicking off with the book The Tinyville Town and we will be focused on problem/solution! After that story, we will begin to learn about and discuss our community.

Our My Community research project will look like this for the week:

Tuesday-circle chart about community. This will serve as a schema type activity! We will share all the things we can think of in our community!

Wednesday-tree map-people, places and activities in our community

Thursday-What Makes A Good Citizen-discuss being a good citizen

Friday-STEM-build a bridge

We start this unit last week with the book The Curious Garden where we talked about changes in communities. We designed gardens and playgrounds and had great discussions about changes in the community.

ABC BOOTCAMP

This week we are continuing ABC BOOTCAMP! ABC BOOTCAMP is the research-based curriculum we created to help students learn letters and sounds in 26 days! This week we are learning S-W. For each letter, we make a circle chart, a hat and do explicit handwriting instruction.

We are continuing to use a special edition of ABC BOOTCAMP!! This year we are using the brand new ZOO KEEPER ABC BOOTCAMP from our friends at Alive Studios. This version of ABC BOOTCAMP is EXACTLY the same as our 5 themes but features the zoo animals from Alive Studios. ZooKeeper ABC BOOTCAMP is only available with the purchase of a Letters Alive Kit from Alive Studios. But don’t worry, you can purchase ABC BOOTCAMP in any of the 5 themes from our TKS Store or TPT!

Alive Studios will have all the details of ZooKeeper ABC Bootcamp on their website soon. Check back to their website for all the details!

ABC BOOTCAMP: Small Groups

This week we’re ready to really jump into small groups. We will be using our ABC BOOTCAMP decodable readers and letter and sounds hunt. I love these letter hunts because it allows to focus on each sound and work on identifying beginning sounds in words. These can be targeted based on data!

letters and sounds

Our ABC BOOTCAMP decodable books or alphabet books are differentiated so we can focus on words, letters and sounds or we can read predictable sentences.

Poem

This week we’re introducing our weekly poem to the class! We use this as a shared reading activity to work on fluency, rhyming words and sight words!

Math: Counting To 20

This week in math we are focusing on numbers and counting to 20! We have officially wrapped up Number Bootcamp so this week we’re working on counting and one to one correspondence.

Counting To 20

Each day we will read a book about numbers and counting. Most of the week will be small groups so we can target our instruction to meet the needs of the students!

Our whole group counting activity will be putting rocks into a truck. For real. First, we will read 20 Big Trucks In The Middle Of The Road. Then students will put rocks into a truck. We are using real rocks and putting them into a Tonka truck.

For our small group lessons, we will be using our Cookie Counting Creation!

We will continue using our ten frame PowerPoint to work on 1 to 1 correspondence!

Mad Science: Disappearing Colors

This week our Mad Science experiment is Disappearing Colors! We use food coloring to make colors and then we use bleach to make colors disappear! Yep. Kids. use. bleach. And it’s 100% OK!
