Read It Up: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

This week we’re learning about weather and we always celebrate weather with Mr. Greg’s all-time most favorite book: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs! This is the first book that ever hooked me and I wanted to read it over and over again! This story is a fun way to kick off a weather theme, and is packed full of great comprehension lessons!

We start with predictions, we work on retelling with sequence words, we talk about things that are real and fantasy and we do some writing!

And of course, I have to dress the part and decorate the classroom!

My costume is just gray sweats and some pictures I printed. I glued the food pictures to the sweats. The food decorations are just pool inflatables that I buy on clearance!

Weather Research Project

We will use our Weather Research Project to learn about meteorologists and each day we will observe the weather and record our observations in our Weather Observation Journal!

After we record the weather we create our own five day forecast!

As part of our weather unit, we do a fun wind experiment where we get to become the wind! We measure to see how far we can blow a feather! (NOTE: in a typical year, we each get our own feather and straw. That will continue this year. Students will also sanitize their hands before coming to the yardstick, and I will wipe the floor with a wipe between students!)

And we do some fun art projects! My favorite is the torn paper sun project!

TKS BOOTCAMP: Vowel Bootcamp

This week we’re continuing with TKS BOOTCAMP with Vowel Bootcamp! This is when we work with long vowels and the CVC-E pattern! After 4 weeks of virtual Vowel Bootcamp, the kids can identify vowels, identify how to make the vowel say its name and they can read and read a_e words. This week we will be continuing Vowel Bootcamp with a focus on reading and writing CVC-E Words!

We spend a week on each vowel and work on segmenting, blending and writing CVC-E words!

We start with a circle chart just like we do in every TKS BOOTCAMP!

Then we work on word building and blending:

Math: Decomposing Numbers To 10

This week in math, we are introducing decomposing numbers using number bonds. We will be using our Math It Up: Decomposing Numbers With Number Bonds creation!

The next few days will be using our giant number bonds. To see a video of this lesson in action, click the link at the end of this post!

Foodie Fun Friday

Our Foodie Fun Friday snack is a new one this year! We will use cake pops or donut holes and icing to make a Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs snack! Stay tuned for details!

St. Patrick’s Day

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we make our newspaper shamrocks from Young School Art With Mr. G.

This week we are using these TKS Creations:
