Happy Schedulin Sunday! This week we are blasting off into space with our Space Research Project, working with OO words in Vowel Teams Bootcamp and measuring with Measure It Up!

Research Projects: Space Research Project

This week we are kicking off our Space Research Project! I am so excited because we haven’t done this research project in a couple of years. And space is such a cool thing to learn about! I can’t wait to see how much we learn over the next two weeks! NOTE: OUR SPACE RESEARCH PROJECT HAS BEEN NEWLY UPDATED!!!!

As with most of our TKS Research Projects, we kick off with our schema map. Students share their schema and we add new learning as we learn about space!

We start off learning about day and night. We make a list of all the things we can do at night and the things we do during the day.

We also paint the night sky using paint and cookie cutters!

On day 2, we learn about astronauts! We read about astronauts and create a graphic organizer. Then, the students must complete an astronaut application to be “hired” as an astronaut. If you’re going to explore the planets, then you must be an astronaut!

Starting on day 3, we journey through the solar system to learn about the planets. Each day we visit a planet, we read about the planet and look at photographs of the planet. Students write about the planet and draw the planet!

Here are the space books we’re using for our Space Research Project:

TKS BOOTCAMP: Vowel Teams Bootcamp

This week we’re continuing our TKS BOOTCAMP with Vowel Teams Bootcamp! This is when we work with vowel teams or vowel pairs. We spend a week on each vowel team or vowel pairs. This week we’re working on the OO pattern as in spoon! We figured that OO words would be perfect since we’re learning about the moon!

We start with a circle chart just like we do in every TKS BOOTCAMP, then we work on word building and word writing!

We use our decodable readers daily in small groups so we have a daily focus on decoding. We also use our new Vowel Teams Blending Cards for daily decoding practice!

Our final activity for the week is our SPOON words chart! I write OO words on plastic spoons The kids read the word and we glue the spoon onto the chart!

Math: Math It Up: Measurement

This week in math, we are learning about measurement! We are comparing and sorting objects by size, comparing objects by weight, and measuring how heavy objects are! We are using our Math It UP: Measurement resource all week!

We read the book Measuring Penny and measure objects using dog biscuits! Normally we walk around and measure objects, but this year students will choose an object, measure the object and share the measurement with the class.

And we use our balance to compare the weight of objects!

This week we’re also measuring space using our Measuring Space creation!

We will also be measuring our height using our Measure It Up Through The Year creation!

Mad Science Thursday

This week for Mad Science Thursday, we are making rockets! We use film canisters, Alka Seltzer and water!

GRAB FILM CANISTERS HERE!

Foodie Fun Friday

This week our Foodie Fun Friday snack is a new space snack: space popcorn! Popcorn, Little Bites chocolate muffins, and sixlets candy! Stay tuned for pictures!

BACKWARDS BOOTCAMP!

This week we kick off our Backwards Bootcamp! We do Backwards Bootcamp to celebrate our year together, to keep the kids engaged and because we start the year with ABC BOOTCAMP! Our year begins and ends with ABC BOOTCAMP!
