Week 13 of kindergarten is a short week packed with learning and fun and a field trip. We have no school on Friday for Veteran’s Day, and Thursday morning is a field trip to the children’s theater to see Charlie And The Chocolate Factory!

WORD FAMILY BOOTCAMP
We have a required foundational skills curriculum that we follow and supplement with our TKS BOOTCAMP resource, especially for extra practice and small group work! Our TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum works with ALL curriculums or as a stand-alone resource! This week, we are continuing Word Family Bootcamp to focus on CVC words, blending and decoding words, writing words, and lots of word chaining!
Word Family Bootcamp is about taking the sounds we learned in ABC BOOTCAMP and using them to read words. We do two word families a week. Day 1 is the circle chart, where we segment sounds, spell the word, and blend the word. We also discuss rhyming words. When working with the sounds, we use all 3 sounds in the word and practice smooth and bumpy blending. Day 2 is word blending, word chaining, and word writing. In small groups, we use decodable readers, word chaining, and look-alike words to differentiate instruction.
Word Family Bootcamp is an all-inclusive resource that is aligned with the science of reading! Word Family Bootcamp includes whole group lessons, small group lessons, decodable readers, and centers!
We also have an intervention hour, and our team has decided to focus on beginning sounds using picture sorts! We are using our Beginning Sounds Picture Sorts resource! The students are now doing these independently. We review the sound on the page and then practice the words to know what the words are. Then the students work on their own, and I begin calling small groups.
We’re also using our Digital Word Building Resource to do word chaining to work on blending CVC words!
Reading
Once again, this year, we’re using our required reading curriculum and supplementing it with our Read It Up! resources. This week, we are starting a new unit about farms! We’re reading an informational text about farm animals and The Three Little Pigs!
For Three Little Pigs we’re doing notice and wonder! We will come back to this book multiple times during this unit!
For our informational texts on farm animals, we’re using our Farms Research Project! This week, we’re doing questions and answers and starting our evidence organizer for animals.
Math
Our district has adopted a new math curriculum (AGAIN!), so we’re trying to figure it out because it’s a lot, and it’s not aligned with our state standards, so there’s that. We’re using the curriculum and supplementing it with our MATH IT UP! resources!
This week, we’re continuing addition and subtraction! We’ve been practicing these skills for a few weeks, and I am impressed with how well the kids are doing! This week is more focused on the equations! We have two days of curriculum and one day to do our own lessons.
Our first lesson from our curriculum is subtracting books. The curriculum has some slides of books on a shelf and we read a story problem to solve the equation. So, we’re adding in real books and making the lesson more hands-on!
The second lesson is adding crabs and writing an equation. It’s actually a paper pencil activity so we will complete it and spend the rest of the time in math centers and small groups.
The third lesson is GET ON MY BOAT to practice addition. We will be doing some independent practice by using kids and boats and writing equations!
We’re also using our field trip day for some estimation and measurement! We’re going to see how many turkeys tall we are!
I tape the turkeys to the wall, and we estimate how many turkeys tall we are, then we count to see our actual measurement. I snap pictures of the kids that they can glue onto their paper!
Thanksgiving
This week we’re using our Thanksgiving Research Project to learn about being thankful and Thanksgiving. We’re going to write about what we’re thankful for and graph our favorite Thanksgiving food!
Art Projects
This week, we’re making our paper plate turkeys and drawing turkeys!
Veteran’s Day
We read a book and discuss the importance of Veteran’s Day. Click the image for some books we like for Veteran’s Day!
