October is the perfect time to learn about spiders, and this blog post contains all of our favorite spider activities for kindergarten. Spiders are a great topic, especially if you can’t celebrate Halloween in your classroom! Keep reading for all of our spider ideas!

Spider Activities For Kindergarten: Spiders Research Project

Our Spiders Research Project introduces all the fun spider learning in kindergarten. It’s available in our TKS Store and in our TPT Store.

Lead your students to discover how beneficial spiders can be, the parts of spiders and more while meeting science standards with this science of reading-aligned resource.

Your students will love learning about spiders and engaging in science activities!  They’ll meet science and ELA standards while developing vocabulary and language skills, and working on graphing and counting.

Spider Activities For Kindergarten:  Graphic Organizers

We start learning about spiders with a schema map. We use Post-It Notes so we can move our thoughts around as we organize our learning!  As we go through our spider research unit, we add learning and move any misconceptions! This is a very visual way for students to organize their learning, and it’s very engaging!  My students know that our schema is what we already know about something.  Using the big vocabulary is so necessary!

We use read alouds and graphic organizers to conduct our research!   As we read, we record our learning and information on the graphic organizers.

True-false sorts are a great way to introduce higher-order thinking and critical thinking skills into the classroom. When a statement is false, the kids have to explain why it’s false. This shows that they can apply what we learned, and it helps build language skills.

We also label the parts of spiders to explicitly learn vocabulary and talk about adaptions!

The students then use their new spider knowledge to write about spiders!

Spider Math

We use spiders to practice addition!  I found these felt spider webs at Michaels and put them on paper plates.  We use spider rings to practice adding by putting together.  I tell the kids to put 2 spiders on one side of the web.  Then I tell them to add 3 more to the other side of the web.  We move the spiders to the middle of the web and find out answer!

We’ve also done this activity with a spider web printed on cardstock!

We found these sparkly spiders at Dollar Tree and use them to practice counting!  The giant ten frames are made from construction paper.  The kid choose a number card, say the number and count the spiders using the ten frames!

Pass The Spider Game

Pass the spider is a great fine motor skills activity, a great way to build teamwork skills and work on hand-eye coordination.  Use plastic straws to pass spider rings only using the straws!  NO HANDS!

Spiders Activities For Kindergarten:  Art, Science, And Snacks

We also do lots of spider art, science, and snacks! No research project is complete without food science, and art!

Spider Slime

We make slime using the recipe in our Student Scientists resource.  We add black glitter and spider rings to make spider slime!

Spiders Snacks

We make a spider using Oreos, pretzel sticks, and candy eyes!

Spider Art Projects

We make these simple spiders using construction paper!  These make a great display to go with student writing!  These spiders were so easy.  We just used rectangles and cut them into oval shapes and glued on 8 legs!

The handprint spiders are my favorite!  These turned out so cute.
