Spookley The Square Pumpkin is always a favorite Halloween read-aloud. It’s a great book about being unique, tolerance, and perseverance. After reading the book, we completed these activities.
For all of our Spookley The Square Pumpkin lessons, we used our Read It Up! resource! Click the image below to learn more about this resource in our TKS Store. It is also available in our TPT Store.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin
We start our literacy activities by making predictions. Making predictions about a story excites our readers’ neurons, engaging them more in the story and helping them focus on it. As we make predictions based on the cover, we record them using our graphic organizer.
After reading the book, we go back and revisit our predictions and write about what actually happened in the story.
Then, we complete a story map to focus on the story elements.
As we completed our story map, we also identified a problem and solution from the story. Students then complete their own story map. After they finish their story map, they must retell the story using the illustrations they drew.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin Text Evidence
Spookley is a great story for introducing text evidence to students. We listed several characteristics of Spookley, and the students had to identify evidence from the text to support those characteristics. We also use adjectives to describe Spookley.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin: Writing
Students used adjectives to write about Spookley. They had to use an adjective to describe Spookley and give a supporting reason. Finally, they illustrated their writing.
Spookley Graphing
Students use sticky notes to graph whether they’ve been to a pumpkin patch. After we complete our graph, we use our recording sheet to analyze the data.
Spookley Snack And Craft
Students even make their own Spookley The Square Pumpkin!
And of course, we make a Spookley snack using graham crackers, icing, Tootsie Rolls and candy eyes.
