Kindergarten Comprehension Lessons: October Read Alouds

October is an exciting time in kindergarten and every grade. It’s also one of those months that is challenging to keep kids engaged. You know what I mean: trick-or-treating, candy, costumes. The kids are on 10 all month long. That’s why it’s so important to have fun, exciting books and lessons to keep them focused, and that’s where our kindergarten comprehension lessons come into play!

Kindergarten Comprehension Lessons: Creepy Pair Of Underwear

What kid (and adult) doesn’t love anything underwear related?! Want to engage your kids? Read a book about underwear. Creepy Pair Of Underwear is a class favorite. It’s great for sequencing, predictions, and problem/solution. And underwear. All the green, glowing underwear!

And of course, you must dress the part! And since you can’t buy a Creepy Pair Of Underwear costume, you make it! I just used green foam board, white paper, and a marker! The straps are made from ribbon!

Kindergarten Comprehension Lessons: Creepy Carrots

The perfect companion to Creepy Pair of Underwear is Creepy Carrots! The kids love this book. The ending is a great tool for some great higher-order thinking skills and discussions. It’s also a great book for a STEM lesson where students build a fence to keep the carrots in! Our Read It Up! creation makes bringing it all together super easy.

And yes, I wear a carrot costume!

After reading both Creepy books, you can do a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the stories!
