My school does dress-up days in December. Last it was the 10 days before break. Well, this year, they decided all 15 days would be dress-up days. Now, I’m all in because I love costumes and theme days. So one of the days is Grinch Day, so we decided to not only dress up for Grinch Day but do an entire day of Grinch Day activities! And let me tell you…we had a blast!
Grinch Day Activities: Set The Stage
In our classroom we have LED lights so we turned them green! I made a slide for our smart board and BAM! We set the stage. Super easy. And the kids loved it!
And of course, no Grinch Day is complete wihtout a visit from the Grinch himself! Thanks to my teammate for dressing up and bringing some Grinchy fun into the school! Yes…there were screams…giggles…and a few tears…
Grinch Day Activities: Phonics
Our Grincy Day phonics game was making the Grinch’s heart grow three times! I made a Grinch on posterboard and cut it out. Then wrote letters on hearts. I said a word, the kids segmented the sounds and wrote the word on their whiteboard. One student came to the board and used the hearts to spell the word. Then we blended the sounds and read the word.
PS I’m very proud of how my Grinch turned out since I just drew it while looking at a picture.
Grinch Day: Comprehension And Language Building
Of course we read the story of the Grinch. Now, I was hesitatnt about this because it’s a bit long and I wasn’t sure the kids would focus the whole time. But ya’ll. They were RIVETED. The entire time. I was so shocked that they were so into the story. So, READ THE BOOKS! After reading, we did a summarizing activity. This was actually a new lesson for us and they knocked it out of the park!
We also talked about what we would do to make the Grinch grin! These ideas were sweet and then we got silly. “Give him noodles!”
Grinch Day Activities: Math
For our Grinch Day math, we sorted Grinch Hershey Kisses! The kids loved this and of course, they loved eating the chocolat when we finished. They worked in groups of 4, sorted, counted and graphed their data!
Grinch Day Art: Directed Drawing
For our Grinch Day art project, we did a Grinch drawing. I told the kids that this would be a hard drawing so do their best. Honestly, I was just telling myself that because I did this completely in the moment while looking at a picture of the Grinch. There were no detailed instructions. Just Mr. Greg winging it. And well, they turned out pretty awesome! Check out the video for your detailed directions!
Grinch Day Snack Ideas
Grinch Day means all the green, grinchy snacks! We had Grinch Juice (green Hawaiin punch), Who pudding (vanilla pudding with green food coloring), and Grinch popcorn. The popcorn was made by The Mister! To make, melt mini marshamllows and add green food coloring. Pour over the popcorn and mix. Add red and green M &Ms and mini-marshmallows. The kids loved it!
I also planned to give the kids a candy cane…but Mr. Grinch had a plan and he licked all the candy canes and turned them green! (PS Green candy canes are hard to find…just saying…)
Finally, we ended Grinch Day by watching the original 1966 cartoon. And again the kids were riveted and loved every second of this!
