Week 27 of kindergarten is the week before spring break! It’s also a short week because Friday is a half day for kids. Teachers have in-service on Friday afternoon then we’re on SPRING BREAK!! We’ve packed this week with addition, subtraction, digraphs, St. Patrick’s Day, and kindergarten lesson plans for past and present!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Phonics And Phonemic Awareness

This week, we’re continuing Blends Bootcamp with digraphs. We are continuing with sh, th, ch, qu, and ng. We’re working on blending, decoding, segmenting and writing words with blends and digraphs. My students are doing well with these digraphs but the ng words are a challenge so we will be focused on those specific sounds this week!

For these activities, we’re using our digraph cards!

Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
For phonemic awareness, we’re moving on to skill 8 of our Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp. Skill 8 is oral blending. This week, we will continue with two very fun activities that my kids loved last week: Feed The Monster and Step It Up! These are included in Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp! Feed the Monster is me saying sounds, students blending the sounds, and finding the picture. They feed the picture to the monster. Race to the word is where students orally blend the sounds and race to find the correct picture!

This week we’re doing lots of simple but effective whiteboard work. We’re focused on spelling our -ng words! Listen, there is nothing wrong with simple activities to build solid foundational skills! We will also be using our large letter cards to build words in the pocket chart. Again, simple but effective.

Another game we’re going to play is FIND OUR FRIEND! We hide a picture of a kid behind cards with words featuring digraphs written on the cards. I say the sounds and students have to find the word. The goal is to find the picture of our friend or teacher.
Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: For Social Studies And Reading: Ben And Now
This week, we’re continuing our third module of our required reading curriculum.
This week, we’re reading the book Ben And Now. This book seems like it would be blah, but kids love it. It’s about Ben Franklin and his inventions. The cool thing is that Ben invented so many things that we use today. The kids love seeing all these inventions. This is a great book for questions and answers, compare and contrast, and learning about how things change but also stay the same! This week’s lessons are about questions and answers and finding the main idea and details!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Addition And Subtraction
This week, we are (GASP!) going a bit rogue. We wrapped up patterns with 95% mastery so we have a little extra time. So, based on data and based on upcoming end-of-the-year benchmarks, we need to work on addition and subtraction. So, guess what we’re doing this week?! We’re busting out the toys and going to the garage to add and subtract with cars!

For these hands-on math lessons, we use toy cars. We play with the cars. And make sound effects. And then we add and subtract by driving our cars in and out of the garage and on and off the road!

Kindergarten Lesson Plans: St. Patrick’s Day
We are never in school for St. Patrick’s Day! But this year, we will be. However, it’s the Monday after spring break so we’re starting our celebration this week. And on St. Patrick’s Day we’re going to do a theme day all about leprechauns! This week we’re reading There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Clover! We’re going to work on sequencing a story, graphing and writing about what makes us lucky!

For our writing lesson, we will write about what makes us lucky.

We will make a torn paper shamrock and we’re going to try a new art project to make a shamrock. Stay tuned!

We’re also breaking out our brand new Lucky Charms centers this week! I can’t wait for the kids to use these!

Morning Meeting
This week our greeting is a pot of gold. I put the kids name on a gold coin. We pick a coin from the pot of gold and greet our friend!
Our activity is to pass a gold coin using clothespins. This is definitely challenging, but it’s so good for their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and focus!
