Week 32 of kindergarten is busy with EE words, money, Sheep In A Jeep, Mermaid Day, and our alphabet countdown! Our kindergarten lesson plans feature hands-on activities, lots of fun, and effective learning.
This year is a little different for me because I get to be a stay-at-home dad, so I can spend more time with our daughters (NOTICE THAT CHANGE?!) Our daughter was born on December 15 and is doing well. Big sister has been amazing, and we’re so happy at how we’re all settling into our new family of 5 (Dolly, our doodle, is a great fur sister!). So, each week for Schedulin’ Sunday, I will post ideas and resources that I use in my classroom for that week in the school year. Each post will also contain links to previous years’ lesson plans!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Phonics EE Words
This week, we change up our phonics lesson to go along with the read-aloud for the week! We read the book Sheep In A Jeep, so our phonics this week is EE words! Now, we use Secret Stories in our classroom, so we’ve been introduced to the EE pattern, but it’s not been explicitly taught until now!
We do explicit instruction with our circle chart.

The next day, we do a decoding activity where we decode words and put them in our Jeep!

Then we get to put sheep in a jeep! We write EE words on balloons. Students decode the words and then put the sheep in the jeep!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Sheep In A Jeep Read Aloud

This week, our read-aloud is Sheep In A Jeep! This is just a fun read-aloud! Kids love it, and it’s the perfect book to use when learning EE words as well as story elements, sequencing, and personification!

Lesson Plans for Kindergarten: Money

This week, we continue our money unit! We learn about coins and their value, we learn why money is important, and we practice counting coins!
Each day, we learn about a coin using a circle chart. We identify the name, value, and attributes of the coin!

Students then find and color the coin!

We also do a “money in the bag” activity where we put coins in a bag, students pull out a coin, identify the name and value, and add it to our money bag!

And finally, our culminating task or project is to make a money person! Students cut out coins and make a person. Then we work together to determine the value of their money person!

And in keeping with our Sheep In A Jeep theme, we get to chase sheep to practice addition! The addition equations are written on balloons. The kids “chase” the sheep and catch the sheep. The write the equation and solve the equation on their paper!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: QU Wedding
This week, we continue our Backward Bootcamp with our QU wedding. But, we don’t do a “wedding.” We’re celebrating friendship because Q and U are best friends! This is a fun way to reinforce a phonics skill that we’ve already learned. Because research is detailed that our kids need review and practice, and they aren’t getting enough of that. These types of activities mean we’re getting review in a fun way!

This isn’t just a fun little ceremony. It’s also standards-based, explicit phonics instruction with decoding, blending, spelling, and encoding. We are also working on phonemic awareness by sorting the k and qu sounds.

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: Mermaid Day
This week is typically the second week of state testing for our upper grades students so that means our schedules are flipped and it means we are sometimes in our room for up to four hours. So, in order to keep the kids engaged (and somewhat quiet!) we do a fun theme day called Mermaid Day! Basically, everything we teach is a mermaid theme. Mermaid phonics, mermaid math, mermaid art, and a fun snack!

We read the book How To Catch A Mermaid to work on comprehension skills like story elements using a story map.

We do mermaid phonics with sticky notes (no slides needed, ya’ll!). We work on CVCe words and word chaining.

Then we do merman math by adding and subtracting pearls! And we do a graphing activity!

Lesson Plans For Kindergarten: End Of The School Year Alphabet Countdown
We’re continuing our Backward Bootcamp! That means we’re less than 26 days from the end of the school year. We celebrate a letter a day going BACKWARDS…it’s a countdown, ya’ll, and we all know a countdown is BACKWARDS…OK…enough of my soap box. Each day, we do a word web for phonics and phonemic awareness; the kids do independent work focused on handwriting, and we do a fun activity like dress-up days, art projects, snacks, etc.

This week is r for red and rainbows, q for QU wedding, p for picnic, o for orange, and n for new name day!

For each letter, we also make a hat! There are two hats for the kids to choose from! The hats are included in our ABC BOOTCAMP manual (not the digital version on TPT). (Note: the manual also includes the digital version of the pages for immediate printing.

Morning Meeting Greeting: Mermaid Greeting
We also do a mermaid morning greeting!
