It’s week 9 of kindergarten, and our kindergarten lesson plans are ready to go. This week is a four-day week because Friday is an in-service day, and then we have fall break! So this week is a review week so we have lots of small groups planned, lots of games, and some fun!

Weekly Kindergarten Lessons: ABC BOOTCAMP
We have completed ABC BOOTCAMP, and we’re spending this week reviewing sounds and letters. A big focus is spelling the sounds and handwriting. Another area we’re focused on is identifying beginning sounds in words. And of course, this means it’s time for the original ABC BOOTCAMP Fashion show!
The vests were sent home weeks ago so they could be worked on at home. The students will wear their vests and walk the runway! Finally, we parade through the school, showing off our vests! This is always a highlight of the school year for everyone and has been since the original ABC BOOTCAMP fashion show 12 years ago!
Another tradition we have is to celebrate mastering our sounds and letters with a room transformation. Now, we do not believe that room transformations are necessary. At all. We also don’t believe these transformations should be stressful for you, cost you a ton of money, or take hours to set up. In fact, our traditional transformation is Candy Land. It takes me 45 minutes to set up and is basically free using materials we’ve collected over the years. This year, I wanted to do something different, so here’s my idea: I’m making the classroom into a giant Chicka Chicka Boom Boom game board! I’m making the game board from brown construction paper, and to decorate, I’m using inflatable palm trees for our luau decor! No cost! Stay tuned next week for all of the details, videos, and pictures!
Kindergarten Lessons: Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp
This week, we also continue Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp! Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp is all about hearing the sounds and the oral language. We start with sentences and work our day down to sounds in words, segmenting etc. This research-based resource is designed for each lesson to take about 10 minutes, and then we move to ABC BOOTCAMP, which has explicit phonics and combines sounds and letters. This week in Phonemic Awareness Bootcamp, we’re working on skill 3, which is hearing beginning sounds. This week we will be doing student circle charts focusing on the sounds we have struggled with in ABC BOOTCAMP: p and b!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Sight Words
This week, we’re continuing sight words in our classroom using our science of reading-aligned resource: Sight Word 60! And yes, you can still teach sight words as long as you teach students to decode, spell, write, and read the words in context! We’re not teaching them to memorize words anymore. We did our first week of Sight Word 60, and it went great! The kids did great and learned the words so quickly so I’m excited to see the continued growth!
This week is a review week for SIght Word 60! We follow a 4-week schedule of sight words. We do 3 weeks of new words, and week 4 is a review week of all of the words we have learned! For this review week, we play games to practice the words. We focus on the words giving us the most difficulty! And we’re still decoding and spelling the words!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Spookley The Square Pumpkin
This week, we have “flex days” with our curriculum, which means we don’t have required lessons! So we’re kicking off spooky season with Spookley The Square Pumpkin.
We recently had a special visit from Spookley himself so my kids will be excited to spend a week doing all the Spookley things!
After reading the story, we will complete a story map, sequence the story and work on text evidence!
We also do some fun art projects! We make our own Spookley and we do a directed drawing of Spookley!
The directed drawing is simple and there really aren’t directions. I drew a square and added the facial features by looking at a picture of Spookley!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Numbers And Counting
This week, we have the week to review and practice math skills that our students need to work on, so we will be focused on number recognition, number writing, and counting to 20! Most of the work will be done in small groups!
We will be using our Game It Up! Numbers And Counting resource! This resource has games for numbers and counting and can be differentiated for number recognition, counting, and numbers up to 5, 10, or 20!
Kindergarten Lesson Plans: Morning Meeting
This week, our greeting will be a pumpkin greeting! And it’s similar to the apple greeting we did last week. I put the kid’s name and pictures on pumpkins and put them in our tree stump bucket. We take turns grabbing a pumpkin and greeting our friends! The bucket is from the Target Dollar Spot!
We are using the apples from our Disco Ball themed clipart set!
Our activity for the morning meeting will be passing a pumpkin! I’ll make a paper pumpkin, and we will pass it using clothespins!
FOODIE FUN FRIDAY
Our Foodie Fun Friday will actually be on Wednesday! We are making a Spookley The Square Pumpkin snack using graham crackers, a Kit Kat and and candy eyes!
