weekly lesson plans and resources for kindergarten

Week 24 of kindergarten is going to be busy. Yep, it’s Valentine’s Day week, so the sugar rush and sugar crash are real! But we’re going to keep the kids busy and in their routines to help minimize the chaos. And we’re going to embrace the chaos! Check out weekly lesson plans for all the things we’re doing this week!

BLENDS BOOTCAMP

We have a required foundational skills curriculum that we follow and supplement with our TKS BOOTCAMP resource, especially for extra practice and small group work! Our curriculum has switched to blends and digraphs, so we will move to Blends Bootcamp. Our TKS BOOTCAMP curriculum works with ALL curriculums or as a stand-alone resource! This week, we are using Blends Bootcamp to focus on words with beginning and ending digraphs, blending and decoding words, writing words, and lots of word chaining!

Blends Bootcamp is about taking the sounds we learned in ABC BOOTCAMP and using them to read words. For five weeks, we do two blends a week with a focus on using all the sounds to decode, spell, write, and read words.

We do a circle chart, word building, word writing, and a word match activity. This is the same routine we do with all of our TKS BOOTCAMP CURRICULUM. This consistency is a key piece of what makes TKS BOOTCAMP so effective.

Blends Bootcamp is an all-inclusive resource that is aligned with the science of reading! Blends Bootcamp includes whole group lessons, small group lessons, decodable readers, and centers!

Intervention And Word Family Bootcamp

We have a 45-minute intervention/PLT block. This time is for small groups focusing on decoding, blending, and spelling words using our sounds. We use our Word Family Bootcamp, specifically our word match, look-like word activities, and decodable text and sentences.

We will also use our Word Mapping mats during this time to work on our segmenting, spelling, and reading words!

We’re also using our Digital Word Building Resource to do word chaining to work on blending CVC words!

We also used our glitter letters clipart to make glitter letter cards, and we’ve been using these cards in whole groups and small groups. The kids LOVE them! (This is CLIPART. You must insert the letter clipart into a document to make letter cards!)

Reading: Past And Present

Once again, this year, we’re using our required reading curriculum and supplementing it with our Read It Up! resources and TKS research projects. We’re now in module 3, which is all about past and present! This week, we’re doing school and home then and now and reading The Little House!

Weekly Lesson Plans: Math

Our district has adopted a new math curriculum (AGAIN!), so we’re trying to figure it out because it’s a lot, and it’s not aligned with our state standards, so there’s that. We’re using the curriculum and supplementing it with our MATH IT UP! and TKS BOOTCAMP curriculums. And Shapes Bootcamp has been updated with so many new and improved activities!

weekly lesson plans for 2D shapes

We kick off Shapes Bootcamp with shape monsters! The kids work in pairs to create shape monsters. Then they present their shape to the class, and we use these discussions to create our 2D shapes anchor chart! The shape monsters are included in our Shapes Bootcamp!

We will do a shape sort at the beginning of our shapes unit and then again at the end to show growth!

shape sorting activities

Each day, we will create an anchor chart for a shape. We name the shape and describe the shape with attributes and real-life objects!

Weekly Lesson Plans: Valentine’s Day

This week is Valentine’s Day! Ya’ll, why is this holiday THE holiday for kids? The energy and excitement for this day are unmatched.

Valentine’s Day kicks off our day with our morning meeting and sharing things we love!

We will measure how many hearts tall we are!

We are doing some fun art projects this week as well!

For our Valentine’s Day party, we’re doing something new! Instead of a table full of sweets, we’re doing…NACHOS! We’re hosting a “Nacho Your Average Valentine’s Day Party!” We’re having a nacho bar. Chips, cheese, and jalapenos. The families are providing everything except the cheese. I am using the giant can of nacho cheese and will heat it in the crockpot. I am excited about this new approach to the day! Stay tuned for details and pictures! The kids will also exchange Valentine’s cards!

Reading Comprehension: A Crankenstein Valentine

This week, we’re reading A Crankenstein Valentine! This is such a great book about friendship! We’re using our all-inclusive Read It Up! to work on retelling and writing about what makes you cranky!

Weekly Lesson Plans: Morning Meeting

This week, our greeting is a heart greeting. This is a new PowerPoint greeting. Here’s my idea: the slide will have a heart. The heart will “open” to reveal a picture of a kid. The kids will greet their friends! Stay tuned to our social media to see this greeting in action this week!

Our morning meeting activity will be passing the chocolate. We will pass a Hershey Kiss using spoons!
